Revelation 12 is the central chapter in the last book of the Bible and it gives a brief outline of the great cosmic battle between good and evil, between satan and God. And the central theme of this chapter is what Jesus did on the cross.

Revelation 12

Revelation 12:1-2 ....'And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:  And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.' ……  So we have here a woman. Now we know from the Word that a woman is a symbol of the Church…… Jeremiah 6:2 ….' I have likened the daughter of Zion to a comely and delicate woman.' ……. 2 Corinthians 11:2 …' For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.' ….. We are the 'bride' of Christ awaiting the marriage at His second coming. Now this woman in Revelation 12:1 is clothed with the sun, which represents Jesus Christ. He is the light of the world and we have 'put on Christ'. The woman also stands on the moon. The moon cannot give it's own light, but reflects light from the sun. The Bible reflects the light of Jesus and is the foundation on which we base our faith. Therefore we 'stand' on the Word of God. The crown of twelve stars represents the 12 tribes of Israel and the 12 apostles, God's chosen messengers. The true church has now inherited the position as God's messengers to the world.

Revelation 12:3-4 …..' And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.' ….. We now come to the dragon! This can be none other than satan himself.   The seven heads and 10 horns and crowns are representation of the earthly powers/kingdoms by which he works. He stood before the woman who was about to give birth, to devour the child. We know that satan tried to kill Jesus as soon as He was born through King Herod. But it was not possible for satan to alter God's plan of redemption.   This redemption would be achieved at the cross.

Notice that satan drew a third of the stars from Heaven. Stars represent the Heavenly angels ….. Revelation 1:20 …' The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches.' ……. How did satan draw a third of God's angels away with him? Well, satan wasn't always 'satan' or 'the devil'. He was created as a perfect, glorious angel …… Ezekiel 28:14-15 …..'Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.   Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.' …… Notice, he was 'perfect' until iniquity was found in him. Iniquity is sin, so how did he sin? …..Isaiah 14:12-14 ….' How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!  For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:  I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.' …… You see, Lucifer became proud and probably jealous of Jesus' position and he wanted to take the position of God himself. So he started to accuse God and His government and convinced a third of God's angels to follow him. Think about it, satan must have given such a convincing argument to the angels for a whole third of them to follow him.

NoteThink about this. God could have destroyed satan from the moment that he sinned. But then all the angels and unfallen worlds might have started to doubt God and think that maybe satan was right. So God allowed satan to do his thing in a bid to prove to the whole universe that God is right and just and satan's accusations were wrong. And has God been proven right? Yes! At the cross of Jesus Christ.

Revelation 12:5 ….'And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.' …… This plainly tells of the birth of Jesus Christ and after His earthly life, death and resurrection, He ascended up into Heaven to the throne of God. …… Revelation 3:21 ….' To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.'

Revelation 12:6 …..' And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.' ….. This is an interesting time period, because it's the same time period that the little horn of Daniel 7, and the beast of Revelation 13 rules this world. The Roman Catholic Church came out of Pagan Rome in 538AD and ruled for 1260 years until 1798. During this time the Roman Catholic Church persecuted the true followers of God. Satan lost His battle with Jesus, so he now goes after those who follow Jesus, 'The Church'. And he uses the Roman Catholic Church to do this. During this time, the true followers of Jesus fled into the wilderness away from the persecuting power of the Roman Church.

Revelation 12:7-9 ….'And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.  And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.' ….. So now John depicts the great battle scene between satan with his angels and Jesus with His angels. Michael is Jesus …… Daniel 12:1 ….'And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people.' ….. This can only be Jesus 'The Great Prince'.

Please noteChapter 12 of Revelation that we are looking at here is not in chronological order. Notice that it starts with the woman (the church) and goes to the 1260 years in the wilderness, which is between 538AD and 1798. And then, we go back to the war in Heaven which happens after Jesus' death on the cross.

So, when does this great battle happen? We need to look at verses 10 and 11 for the answer ...... Revelation 12:10-11 ....' And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.' ……. 'Now is come salvation'. When did salvation come? At the cross! The true followers of Jesus 'overcame him (satan) by the blood of the Lamb (Jesus).' Satan accused us before God day and night declaring that we belonged to him. You see, Adam and Eve, when they first sinned and followed satan rather than God, they gave dominion of this world over to satan. Satan is the 'prince' and 'god' of this world. This world is his dominion. See the following verses that confirm this:

John 14:30 ….'Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.'

2 Corinthians 4:4 ….'In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not.'

So satan became the god of this world when Adam and Eve sinned and he still had access to Heaven. He was still able to come before God and 'accuse' the brethren, you and me.   If you take a look at Job 1, satan comes before God and God asks satan if he had considered Job. In essence, God is saying to satan 'hey, you think that man now belongs to you, take a look at Job, he serves ME.' And then satan mocks at Job's obedience to God, saying that he only obeys God because of the many good things God had blessed Job with, hence why satan took everything off Job thinking that Job would then curse God and serve satan. But, Job proved satan's accusations wrong, by still trusting in God…… Job 2:9-10 ….' Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.  But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.'

So satan still had access to God where he accused us and God and His government day and night, UNTIL Jesus gave His life on the cross. You see, the cross proved to the whole universe that satan was a liar and a murderer. All God's angels and maybe even the unfallen worlds out there finally saw what satan really was all about, and as described in Revelation 12:9-10, he was completely cast out of heaven. He was cast to this earth.

Revelation 12:12 …..'Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.' ….. The heavens can now rejoice, because satan no longer has access to heaven, he has now been completely 'cast out'. But, this verse should serve as a warning to everyone. 'Woe to the inhibiters of the earth.' Since the cross of Jesus, with satan being cast out of Heaven completely, he knows he has lost, therefore he has great wrath. He is very angry because he knows there isn't much time left for him, and he is going to focus ALL of his power and attention on the followers of Jesus.

Revelation 12:13-16 …..'And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child. And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.  And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.  And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.' ……. Now we are back to the 1260 years of persecution that the true followers suffered at the hands of the Roman Catholic Church between 538 AD and 1798. God cared for His true followers and they fled into the wilderness away from this Roman Catholic persecution.

"Behind the lofty bulwarks of the mountains--in all ages the refuge of the persecuted and oppressed--the Waldenses found a hiding place. Here the light of truth was kept burning amid the darkness of the Middle Ages. Here, for a thousand years, witnesses for the truth maintained the ancient faith."   The Great Controversy, pp. 65, 66.

This 'time, times and half a time' is the same as the one in Daniel 7 that the terrible beast continues for, which is 1260 years. Satan tried to wipe out the true Christians through the Roman Catholic Church, but as we know, satan cannot stop God's will from being fulfilled. Notice in the verse above also, that it says the earth helped the woman. This symbolizes the time when the true Christians fled Europe for the new shores of America in the 17th century.

Revelation 12:17 …..'And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.' ….. Millions of true Christians were killed during the papal persecutions, but satan couldn't wipe them all out, and that made him very angry. So, what does he do? He 'goes away' to make war with the remnant. Satan has devised a great master plan to deceive the world during the Bible end times, and we need to be rooted in Jesus and the Word of God to know what this deception will be, so that we can be prepared. Notice who it is he is going after……Those who keep God's ten Commandments and the testimony of Jesus. If satan isn't coming after you, then maybe you're not living the life you should be living.

Please notice one very important verse from this chapter….. Revelation 12:11 …..' And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.' ……Notice there are three important things that marked these as true saints of God:

1st - They accepted Jesus.

2nd - Their testimony showed what they did after they accepted Jesus and who they REALLY served.

3rd - They were prepared to die for their faith in Jesus.

Have you truly accepted Jesus into your life? Does your testimony show you to be a true Christian? Are you prepared to die for your Lord and Savior?

If you can give positive answers to the above, then you are a true saint of God. But be prepared, satan will do his best to deceive you and draw you away from God.  Stay rooted in Jesus and in His Word every day.
